Book Spotlight: ‘Leadershift’ by John Maxwell

When I surveyed readers of A Deliberate Life, one of the themes you said you most enjoyed was content was around ideas and reading, and my annual ‘Top 10 Reads’ posts are consistently among the most popular, so I thought I’d start featuring particular books I’m reading. I’d love to hear if there are particular books from former lists that you’d like to see featured!

I’m kicking off today with a book I just finished – the most recent release from leadership guru and prolific author, John Maxwell.

My Top Reads of the 2010s

You may have seen my latest ‘annual top reads’ post, but I decided I wanted to do an extra post that was a bit special – the books that have been most compelling for me over the last 10 years.

Each of these books has become one that I often refer to or recommend; has fundamentally shifted the way I think about something; or has introduced a critical new concept to the ‘furniture of my mind’.

I will say it was very difficult to narrow down the list, but each of these books has made a significant impact on me during the 2010s, and I would highly recommend all of them.

So without further ado, and in no particular order…

Top 10 Reads of 2019

There are so many books we could pick up, and only so much time! I’m a big fan of hearing from others which books they found particularly worthwhile, and these annual blog posts are always among the most popular, so I know many of you feel the same. In aid of that, It’s time for my annual round-up of the books I’ve read during the year, including the ten that I found most compelling.

Top 10 Reads of 2018

Each December I share a round-up of the books I’ve found most compelling throughout the year. If you’re looking for ideas for your 2019 reading list, here are the ten reads I would most highly recommend from the last year, as well as my full list.

If there’s a theme in my reads for the year, it would probably be ‘Attention’. The issue of what we choose to pay attention to (personally, organisationally and socially), what forces are at work to influence that, what is at stake, and how we can be deliberate in focusing our attention, is a thread throughout a number of the books below. I believe it’s a critical issue for us all within our current social context, and I believe there is great hope to be found in the potential for positive change when we are, in a sense, attentive to our attention.

Top 10 Reads of 2017

Looking for holiday reads now that Christmas is over? Want to plan to read more in 2018? Here are my top 10 reads from 2017, in no particular order, plus the full list of books I read throughout the year.

As the inimitable Dr. Seuss so memorably put it, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!”

Plus, in a world that’s increasingly distracted and insular, making reading a regular part of your life helps develop both your focus and your empathy, increasing the potential for you to bring your best both to tasks and to relationship. That sounds to me like a good way to set yourself up for the best possible 2018!
